How inheritance works

  1. You chose who inherits.
You can designate one beneficiary for each vault. Upon necessary conditions, they will receive all contents, such as tokens and NFTs if applicable.

    • Beneficiaries must accept the request and download the app to get access. They'll be aware of their inheritance but not the specific contents.

    • They won't be informed about any vault changes, including emptied contents.

    • You can enhance security by adding a password to the inheritance. Including this password in your will ensures the beneficiary can only use it if you've passed away.

    • The setup process requires both your mobile key and hardware key to maintain security, ensuring only you can set it up.

  2. If something happens to you...
As Oasis Vault is designed to protect your privacy, we don’t have access to personal data, or even know who you are. That’s why we rely on your beneficiary to let us know if something happens.
If you included a passphrase in your will, they’ll use it to start the claim.

  3. Your beneficiary has to wait. Before anything moves, every claim includes a buffer period with daily email notifications to you. This ensures a claim can’t be completed while you’re still alive. We’ll try to contact you daily for months to ensure nobody is trying to take advantage of some vacation you might be in. During this time, you can cancel the claim with one click.

  4. If you never reply...
We’ll assume the claim is valid, and proceed with the transfer. Your beneficiary will provide a blockchain address, to which all funds in your vault will be sent, including tokens and NFTs if applicable. This address doesn't need to be from Oasis Vault, and we won't check wether it accepts all of our assets. If your vault contained NFTs, we will suggest your beneficiary to provide an address that supports them, however we won't be able to check that their destination is in fact suitable. If your beneficiary is not crypto savvy, we recommend you leave them a basic explanation of suitable addresses, depending on your funds.

  5. Privacy is maintained throughout the process You beneficiary will only know exactly what you left them after they receive the transaction, and only at that point will they know your Vault's address.

🔐 Inheritance is a delicate thing
As a part of the setup, your beneficiary will get a key. This key can’t access funds on its own (neither see nor move them). But if your trust changes, we won’t be able to delete their key, as it will be stored in their phone. The safest thing would be to transfer your money to a new vault.
